Red Aurora (2023)
Commissioned for the live performance of my colleague's public undergraduate senior performance recital (William Regalis, B.M. Music Ed.).
For Tenor Trombone and Bass Trombone
Duration: ca. 8:30
Program Note
Commissioned for the live performance of my colleague's public undergraduate senior performance recital (William Regalis, B.M. Music Ed.). Completely out of left field, this composition is far from where I am used to composing. I had to stretch myself creatively, encapsulating the events of a natural phenomenon through avant-garde motifs.
Many scientific happenings are needed to create the bright, vivid red picture of a red aurora. Nordic mythology recognizes this event as an omen of war, or that something dangerous is forthcoming on the horizon. I had such fun imagining the possibilities and practicalities of this work, and valued the time taken to explore this avenue of my artistic passion.
Dedicatory & Acknowledgments
Dedicated to the ethereal phenomenon of a red aurora, and its timeless mysteries beautifully etched across the canvas of a clear night sky.
And a special thank-you to William Regalis; I am extremely grateful to have collaborated with you on your senior recital. Thank you for giving me this platform to test my creative voice, as well as to collaborate on your momentous moment. I feel encouraged by your support of new music, and I know that you will do great things within and outside your music teaching endeavors.
